Starting from Scratch focuses on aiding in the production, financing and distribution of small-scale audiovisual projects made by artists and filmmakers whose work is at the intersection of visual art and cinema.

Focusing on short and mid-length moving image works, these projects can be creative nonfiction, essayistic or artist films, and can take the form of single channel films intended for cinema, projector performances, expanded cinema and video or film installation. While we have the background and experience to support all moving image formats, we have a strong passion for the continued use of analog film in both production and exhibition.

Starting from Scratch works collectively: in addition to realizing individual projects, our goal is to bring people into contact with each other to see if they can help each other with realizing their plans. Developing a network and support system for these marginal works is crucial for their creation and distribution. Resources, knowledge and feedback are shared as horizontally as possible.

With extensive experience in (experimental) film programming and a large global network within the international film festival circuit, we are a team of active curators within various Dutch art initiatives with an understanding of the artistic and financial considerations of funding bodies, arts institutions, museums and festivals.
